Fraud in Food Delivery Market Poses Threat to Consumer Protection

Chargebacks911® COO Monica Eaton’s Latest Column for GritDaily

The food delivery market is booming. In fact, US consumers are expected to place $38 billion in food orders via mobile device next year alone. But, as Monica points out in her latest feature for Grit Daily, it’s not all good news for food and beverage merchants.

GritDaily is a leading news source for information on brands, fashion, tech, influencers, entrepreneurship, and life. The site reaches thousands of aspiring entrepreneurs around the world each day.

Fraud is a serious concern for entrepreneurs in the food and beverage market. Increased activity on mobile apps creates opportunities for fraudsters. Account takeover, card testing, and gift card fraud are all seeing rapid increases, and mobile food ordering is at the center of the matter. This, in turn, causes problems for everyone involved.

“Regardless of the attack method or whether it’s carried out by intentional bad actors or customers who simply don’t understand a merchant or banking policy, the result is largely the same: businesses lose money,” Monica explains. “In turn, these actions drive up prices for consumers and limit choices available in the market.”

Monica goes on to say that consumers should take a central role in the fight against fraud. Their behaviors are key to addressing this pressing matter. “Merchants can block fraud, but only consumers can really stop it. It’s why we need to invest more energy in educating consumers about best practices to protect themselves and protect the market at large.”
