COO Monica Eaton Offers Tips to Prevent Cybercrime

Monica Eaton is a world-recognized expert in payments and digital security. In a recent feature for Reader’s Digest, Monica had the opportunity to provide some insight on how consumers should defend themselves against fraud.

Reader’s Digest is America’s fourth largest-circulation magazine brand. After nearly a century in publication, RD stands out more than ever in today’s cultural landscape due to its themes of optimism, faith, heroism, trust, humor, and wellness.

Digital security is a major concern for contemporary consumers. We conduct much of our business online, and as a result, there’s a tremendous volume of data floating around. This creates opportunities for bad actors who are looking to manipulate and steal from consumers whenever possible.

As cited in the piece, cybercrime may cost the world a shocking $6 trillion annually by 2021. This total includes direct financial loss, as well as lost productivity, restoration costs, and the deletion of hacked data and systems. In response to this threat, reporters at Reader’s Digest assembled some of the most respected thought leaders in the digital security space to offer their best tips to prevent abuse.

“Only transmit personal data on websites that are https,” Monica explains, referencing the https URL protocol. “Nowadays, all the reputable e-commerce sites are https…Most scam sites, however, are http (no ‘s’ at the end), because http sites are cheaper than https sites. So, if you receive an email solicitation to use at a website that’s http, be extra careful. It could be a fraud attempt.”
