The Internet of Things is, at its core, a value-neutral innovation. It can make processes better than ever, but it could also create incredible new problems.

With order fulfillment, for instance, the IoT makes transparency and accountability possible. Merchants their vendors can also benefit from new insights and improved decisioning. There are obstacles, though, such as inconsistent adoption and implementation. IoT tools will suffer from blind spots without consistent deployment of technology through the order fulfillment process. This may produce false data, leading businesses to deploy the wrong solutions for problems.

“Real-time tracking tools create accountability and trust, and they could be helpful in preventing chargebacks,” Monica says. “We have the technology, but it’s not used effectively enough by merchants today. According to a report published last year by DHL and IBM, data is one of the most underutilized assets in the logistics industry. While AI tools have the power to leverage data, many businesses remain skeptical and bound to the way things have always been done.

“It’s not to say skepticism is bad. Like any innovation, IoT technologies have the potential to be misused and abused.”
