Chargebacks911 was recently featured in The Paypers following the release of the company’s 2026 Chargeback Field Report, which examines the growing relationship between buy now, pay later (BNPL) services and payment fraud. Monica Eaton, Founder and CEO of Chargebacks911, contributed her perspective on the operational challenges merchants can face as they introduce new payment methods.
The feature highlights a key finding from the report: 40% of surveyed merchants associate BNPL with increased fraud risk, including businesses that already offer BNPL at checkout. Among merchants that have not adopted the payment method, elevated fraud exposure was the most commonly cited reason for staying away. The article also notes that just 19.1% of surveyed merchants currently accept BNPL, despite continued consumer demand for installment-based payments.
“Merchants are adopting BNPL primarily to meet consumer demand and improve conversion,” Monica said, describing those as legitimate business drivers. She also warned that introducing a new payment method without understanding how disputes are handled can create a gap between the checkout experience and what happens when a return or dispute arises.
The article explains that BNPL can make the purchasing experience simple for consumers while creating additional complexity on the back end. Unlike a conventional card transaction, BNPL transactions can involve additional parties and processes, making disputes more difficult for merchants to monitor and manage. Chargebacks911’s research suggests that businesses need greater visibility into dispute activity across different payment methods as BNPL adoption grows.
