Instagram’s new policy banning adults from messaging anyone under the age of 18 is a positive step for making the platform safer for young users. However, it’s still insufficient to really protect them.
"There are no foolproof solutions that will guarantee a safe, online experience for your child," Monica says. "Is it a good thing for Instagram to try to restrict adults from pestering kids? Of course. Is it anywhere close to being sufficient to stop predators completely? Of course not."
As a parent, one feels the urge to protect their child from harm at any costs, but that simply may not be feasible in a digitally connected world. Monica suggests the best approach is for parents to use these new features to complement their own efforts, and for parents to take an active role in teaching their children how to stay safe online.
