Monica Eaton, a globally-recognized thought leader in digital security, spoke with Drew Turney of Cosmos Magazine to share her thoughts on the future of IoT devices in fraud prevention.

IoT devices occupy an integral role in millions of homes. With the growth in this sector, companies around the world are competing to produce the best flexible, biodegradable, and low-cost connected technologies. This led to what some now call the Internet of Disposable Things, IoDT.

Manufacturers can embed temporary or ultra-cheap sensors to any number of inexpensive media like food or textiles. In effect, they can turn packaging and other disposables into IoT devices for tracking to ensuring quality. While this presents tremendous opportunities, Monica suggests that are also security concerns.

“Interestingly, it could very well be that our fear of data breaches triggers a demand for disposable IoT devices,” she says. “Something that only temporarily tracks your personal data might be perceived as less risky than a device used over many years.” Whether this perception ultimately pays off, though, is much harder to predict.
