Monica Eaton Discusses Her Business Journey & Promoting Success for Women
Chargebacks911 COO Monica Eaton joined Dr. Maribeth Kuzmeski as a guest this week on popular business podcast the Female Insight Zone.
Monica had the chance to talk about her entrepreneurial journey and business expertise. The most important part, though, was discussing how to promote women in the business environment and help more women achieve success.
“Bottom-Up” Approach to Grow the Ranks of Women in Tech
One of the key points Monica touched on was to distinguish the “top-down” approach to empowering women in technology, as opposed to “bottom-up.”
“There’s a lot of emphasis on a top-down approach [to promoting women in technology],” Monica explained. “What I’ve found is that a bottom-up approach is more effective.” The top-down approach is led by HR departments and corporate boards looking to hire women. Before they can act, though, we need to have qualified candidates.
That’s why it’s so important to encourage girls at a young age to explore technology. A young girl who feels encouraged to explore tech might discover an aptitude she didn’t know about, like Monica did. “Just like every student learns academics…[technology courses] should be a requirement, not an elective. That’s one of the biggest issues I see with our system today and why some countries are making strides where we aren’t.”
Another essential part of the equation is mentorship. “I had some incredible mentors; people that I worked with at an early age,” Monica says. Until we have the mechanisms in place to lead young women toward tech, mentorship will be the strongest tool we have.
Of course, that’s just one part of the conversation.
