Chargebacks911 COO Monica Eaton appeared in a recent feature for RealSimple, weighing in on the value of credit card rewards.
Real Simple is an American monthly magazine published by Dotdash Meredith. The magazine features articles and information related to homemaking, childcare, cooking, and emotional well-being.
Credit card rewards are a beneficial way to earn miles, points, and cash-back just for spending money. But, not all benefits are available automatically. According to the article, you have to be aware of all the offers and avoid blindspots catching you by surprise to reap the full value of rewards.
Failing to enroll in card benefits seems to be one of the biggest mistakes people are making with their credit cards. “Some [credit card benefits] have to be overtly activated,” Monica said. “If you don't take the initiative, you can't enjoy the perks.”
A 2021 study by the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection found that more than one-third of all cardholders fail to sign up for an online account or download their card's app. “That's a big mistake because the app makes it so much easier to track your expenses and take advantage of all your benefits,” warned Monica.
“So, download the app, and make sure you're not just aware of all the perks, benefits and freebies available, but also enrolled and signed-up for them too,” she urged consumers. Even if you don't have a plan to use all of them, it's good to know what your benefits are. “Weird, unpredictable things happen all the time. There might be a moment when you really need that hotel room, or an extra bag for a flight.”
