Chargebacks911’s COO Addresses Gender, Business and Technology in Latest Radio Interview

As COO and co-founder of Chargebacks911®, Monica Eaton knows first-hand the challenges women face in the professional world.

Last week, Monica sat down with Mike Schikman of WSVA radio to discuss everything from pay inequality to gender expectations and the role of technology in leveling the playing field.

Women and Self-Promotion

Schikman pointed out the extra challenges women face in breaking out in the business world, which Monica suggested were partially the result of a character difference between men and women:

Monica: …I think that one of the innate differences between men and women is that women don’t grow up giving themselves enough credit.

    Mike: True.

Monica: In order to get promoted, you really have to promote yourself. This is a part of our makeup in society as a whole. Women are usually not at the forefront stating all of their good works, all of the thing they’ve done. Really, many times to get ahead you have to promote all of the things that you’ve done, you have to promote your competency, what things you’ve actually achieved.

At the same time, Monica also suggests that technology is currently making it easier for women to achieve greater heights in business, and will continue to do so. Whereas before, when women were expected to typically put the needs of family ahead of their career aspirations, technology makes it easier for families to balance work and familial obligations.

Not only are women better able to maintain a professional and a family life, but technology creates a fluid, adaptable and ultimately more resilient family dynamic.

Technology and Perception

While technology makes it easier for women to establish themselves professionally, society’s handling of gender diversity lags behind the curve.

“With the internet introducing more women,” Eaton explains, “I think that we’re opening more doors, it just needs to be a little more progressive.”

Monica asserts that one of the best ways to continue this trend toward greater diversity is by encouraging and guiding the next generation.

As studies suggest, companies with more diverse workforces tend to outperform organizations with homogenous employee bodies. A variety of perspectives which more accurately reflect society make for a more dynamic company with a better understanding of the world.

However, only by fostering a generation of young people from a variety of different backgrounds interested in business or in STEM fields will it be possible to eventually achieve that level of healthy diversity.
