Ask Asa: New FTC ‘Click to Cancel’ Rule Faces Pushback

New rules introduced by the FTC are aimed at simplifying the subscription cancelation process. But, there may be complications at play, as noted in a new feature for WJCL.

WJCL is a local ABC news affiliate based in Savannah, Georgia. The station began broadcasting in 1970, and reaches an audience of hundreds of thousands of viewers each day in Southeastern Georgia.

The public response to the FTC’s newly announced rule, which aims to make it easier to cancel subscriptions, has been overwhelmingly positive. And, as Chargebacks911 CEO Monica Eaton explains in the piece, it could be beneficial for businesses, as well as customers.

“More and more consumers are contacting their banks to cancel subscriptions, at an astronomical cost to businesses today,” Monica explains. “In fact, the growth in these pesky types of transaction disputes has grown by about 100% in the last two to three years.”

Some industry groups disagree, with a number of trade organizations having already filed suit against the FTC to block the rule. But, as noted in the piece, adopting click-to-cancel procedures will “create better relationships between businesses and their customers.”
