Why Women Remain Underrepresented in Tech Entrepreneurship-fb

Monica Eaton’s Monthly Column for Grit Daily

The number of women seeking business degrees is at near-parity with male students. When it comes to entrepreneurship and technology, though, Chargebacks911® COO Monica Eaton says women still lag far behind.

Monica examines this disconnect in her monthly post for entrepreneurship and lifestyle site Grit Daily, and explains what we can do to encourage a more dynamic business environment.

Diversity is Good for Business

Research from the American Sociological Association shows gender-diverse groups show above-average profitability. In contrast, more homogenous organizations are more likely to underperform. Diverse groups draw on a broader range of experiences and perspectives, and thus, are more dynamic and responsive.

But, as Monica explains in the post, women are underrepresented in entrepreneurship indicators. “…while more women may be pursuing business education, they represent only 18% of students in theory-focused entrepreneurship studies,” she says. The problem is even more pronounced when it comes to STEM and tech entrepreneurship.

“Women in leadership roles are important to market competitiveness and innovation, especially in highly-competitive and fast-moving fields like tech. If women avoid entrepreneurial and STEM-focused training on their career path, they could miss out on opportunities to level the playing field.”

Fortunately, there are steps we can take to mitigate this problem.
