Shopify ProtectDoes Shopify Protect Really Insure You Against Chargebacks?

Shopify Protect

In a Nutshell

Shopify Protect offers free chargeback protection, but it doesn’t eliminate chargeback risk entirely. In this post, we explain how Shopify Protect works, why it won’t help your chargeback ratio, and where its coverage stops. We’ll also break down the program's limitations, including what it covers… and more importantly, what it doesn’t.

What Shopify Protect Actually Covers (& the Critical Limitations That Most Merchants Miss)

If you’re one of the 2+ million global merchants who use Shopify to run their eCommerce businesses, you may already be aware of a perk offered to merchants on the platform called Shopify Protect.

If you haven’t heard of it, you’re in the right place, because this post is all about explaining how the program works. Oh, and if you’re already taking advantage of Shopify Protect, you should stick around, too. There’s a good chance you’re using it wrong… but don’t worry, I’m here to help.

Shopify Chargebacks

If you sell on Shopify, you’ll want to know how chargebacks work on the platform ahead of time. Don’t wait until you receive a Shopify dispute to find out. In this Knowledge Guide, we’ll run down everything you need to know about Shopify chargebacks, from statistics and benchmarks to response and prevention strategies.

What is Shopify Protect?

Shopify Protect

[noun]/SHäp • ə • fī • prə • tekt/

Shopify Protect is a free fraud protection program that reimburses Shopify merchants for chargeback losses on certain eligible orders.

One of the benefits of using Shopify is the platform’s free fraud protection program, appropriately named Shopify Protect. If a chargeback qualifies, you will not be held liable, and could potentially be reimbursed the full order amount (including the standard Shopify chargeback fee). In eligible cases, Shopify will even handle the dispute process for you.

The key word there, however, is “eligible.“

The program only applies to chargebacks with a “fraud” reason code, for example. The transaction must have been completed through Shop Pay. Specific shipping methods must be used, and there is a strict list of timelines a case must meet in order to qualify. Also, even if a dispute qualifies for protection, reimbursement will hinge on whether you follow all the submission requirements within the allotted time windows.

Did You Know?

Shop Pay is Shopify’s fast checkout system, which saves customers’ payment and shipping info for quicker purchases.

Shopify Protect Eligibility Requirements

TL;DR

Shopify Protect only covers third-party criminal fraud on qualifying US Shop Pay orders and has strict eligibility rules. Orders must meet all payment, fulfillment, shipping, and tracking requirements — especially the 7-day fulfillment and 10-day “in transit” deadlines.

Shopify Protect was created as a safeguard against third-party criminal fraud. That includes things like identity theft and other cases where neither you, nor the customer, is at fault. The core eligibility requirements, some of which we touched on above, include:

  • You (the seller) are located in the US
  • You have a US-based Shopify Payments account
  • The order status indicates either “Protection Active“ or “Protected“
  • Payment for the order was made via Shop Pay
  • The order was processed with Shopify Payments
  • The order is made up of physical items (digital goods are not covered)
  • The shipping address was not changed after checkout
  • Fulfillment took place within 7 days of the order
  • Shipping was conducted using a supported carrier
  • A valid carrier tracking number was added for the order
  • Tracking was added within the fulfillment deadline, not after the fact
  • The order was labeled “in transit“ within 10 days of the order

Shopify Protect gives you a significant leeway when it comes to your carrier of choice. US Postal Service (USPS), UPS, FedEx, and the Shopify Fulfillment Network are all supported, as long as you get a tracking number.

What Does Shopify Protect Cover?

If an order meets all the conditions outlined in the last section, and later gets charged back due to an unauthorized/fraudulent payment, Shopify Protect will cover the loss.

Tip

Covered Chargeback Types

There are two specific claims that may be made by a cardholder which will entitle you to Shopify Protect coverage:

  • Fraudulent Transactions: An unauthorized transaction made using stolen payment information
  • Unrecognized Transactions: The cardholder doesn't recognize the  merchant or transaction in question
Tip

What You Receive

If a transaction is covered, you’ll be reimbursed for the full amount of the original transaction, including shipping fees. The $15 Shopify chargeback fee, which you’d be required to pay for any transactions not covered by Shopify Protect, will not be assessed here.

Shopify will handle all activities related to the dispute process automatically on your behalf. There’s no evidence submission required from you, for example.

Tip

Resolution Timeline

Everything happens more or less instantaneously. You get a notification when a covered chargeback is filed, but you’re also subject to automatic reimbursement.

Shopify may choose to submit a chargeback response to the cardholder’s bank, but this is done at their discretion, and has no impact on your reimbursement. They’ll submit evidence on your behalf, with final dispute resolution occurring within 120 days.

Something else to keep in mind: protected chargebacks still count toward your overall chargeback ratio. Shopify Protect helps with the financial side of fraud, but it won’t exempt you from chargeback thresholds.

What Shopify Protect Does NOT Cover

TL;DR

A “Not Protected” Shopify order usually means a missing eligibility rule (fulfillment timing, carrier choice, or payment method, for example). Shopify Protect also doesn’t cover many common chargeback reasons, such as “item not received” or “not as described,” so many disputes won’t qualify.

At times you may have a seemingly copacetic order that still shows “Not Protected.“ This probably isn’t a glitch… it’s more likely you overlooked some requirement.

You may have accidentally passed the fulfillment deadline, for example, or tried to use an unsupported carrier. You should also check the payment method: Shop Pay is required, but orders through Shop Pay Installments typically aren’t eligible for coverage.

Did You Know?

One of the most common causes of Not Protected status for Shopify orders is a mixed cart: one that has both physical items (which are protected) and digital items (which are not protected).

There are a lot of situations where Shopify Protect isn’t even an option. For example, no chargeback filed with any of the following reason codes would be covered:

  • Item not received
  • Duplicate charges
  • Cancelled subscription
  • Credit not processed
  • Product unacceptable / not as described

Here’s an idea of what that might look like in real life:

Alleged ReasonReasonCovered?
Customer receives signs for order, then, files “item not received”Friendly fraudNo
Customer claims product defectiveMerchant or carrier issueNo
Customer forgets about recurring chargeCustomer errorNo
Merchant accidentally charges twiceMerchant errorNo

Now, it’s possible that a dispute may qualify for protection even if it’s filed under a non-protected reason code. The investigation could discover the charge was actually unauthorized or fraudulent, meaning coverage may still apply. It’s rare, but it happens.

How to Check If an Order Is Protected

TL;DR

Prior to fulfillment, check Shopify Protect status to see if an order’s marked Protection Active, Protected, or Not Protected. Check all coverage requirements, as nothing can be altered later.

Shopify conveniently tells you right up front if an order is protected. When looking at the order details in Shopify Admin, you’ll see a protection status right near the top. The status could be one of three options:

  • Protected: All of the boxes have been checked, and the order is fully covered if a fraud chargeback happens.
  • Protection Active: The order could be covered, assuming you do everything else by the book.
  • Not Protected: Shopify-speak for “Nope.” The order was never even eligible for coverage.

If you’re investigating a transaction to see if it’s protected before fulfillment, what you’re hoping to see is Protection Active. That’s your cue to double-check that all Shopify’s conditions are met. That includes making sure the carrier is supported, you get a tracking number, and everything’s done by the deadline. Once the tracking data is validated by Shopify, the status should switch to Protected.

This pre-fulfillment check is your last real chance to make sure Shopify Protect will actually apply.

75+% of chargebacks are likely friendly fraud. Chargebacks911 pioneered friendly fraud fighting: no other provider can offer more data, experience, and expertise.

Chargebacks cost you way more than the initial transaction amount.

What to Do About Not Protected Shopify Transactions

You’ll almost always have more Not Protected orders than anything else, but that’s not the end of the world. Fulfill and ship the order, just make sure you keep your receipts. I’m talking screenshots, tracking details, transcripts of customer communications… basically anything that might help if the customer later decides to dispute the charge.

Of course, if an order is not protected, you might want to consider doing a manual review, just to be safe. Here again, documentation is everything: if a non-protected dispute comes in later, you’ll need evidence to back a challenge.

One last thing that trips people up: while you’ll see both in Shopify Admin, fraud analysis and protection status are not the same thing. Fraud analysis is Shopify’s best guess at how risky an order looks. Protection tells you whether the order is eligible for protection at all. They’re powered by different systems, meaning you can easily have a “low risk” order that isn’t protected.

Why Most Chargebacks Aren’t Covered by Shopify Protect

The limitations are important because genuine third-party fraud is only the culprit in a relatively small number of chargebacks.

It’s much more common for chargebacks to get filed because an item gets lost in transit, or because the item didn’t live up to the buyer’s expectations. So, more disputes end up getting filed using an “Item not received“ or “Not as described“ reason code, rather than a “fraud” one.

In a lot of cases, the cardholder’s claim might not even be legit. The bulk of chargebacks filed by cardholders stem from first-person misuse, or “friendly fraud.” This is when a customer files a chargeback against a legitimate transaction due to buyer’s remorse, a misunderstanding, or an attempt to get something for free.

In other words: most chargebacks won't be covered.

Chargebacks Covered Under Shopify Protect Still Count Against You

TL;DR

Shopify Protect may reimburse fraud losses, but protected chargebacks still count against your chargeback ratio. High ratios can trigger card network monitoring, penalties, cash-flow restrictions, or even account issues.

Even if Shopify Protect can keep your revenue safe in some chargeback cases, the chargeback is still on your record. Reimbursed or not, the dispute will be a black mark on your overall chargeback rate.

Excessive chargeback activity can impact your Shopify Payments account standing, meaning they’ll likely be watching you a bit more closely.

At the card network level, chargebacks are tracked through monitoring programs. Cross a certain threshold, and you could trigger penalties or “corrective action requirements.” That’s a fancy way of saying you could be forced to enroll in a monitoring program.

In more serious situations, high chargeback rates can result in payment holds or rolling reserves, wreaking havoc on your cash flow. Worst-case scenario, it could lead to account suspension, even if individual disputes were reimbursed via Shopify Protect.

This is one more area where Shopify Protect is often misunderstood. It was never designed to be a primary defense. Shopify Protect is more like a safety net; helpful only in certain situations.

All this is to say that an overall chargeback prevention strategy still matters. You can’t get the full picture if you’re only paying attention to fraud disputes: as we said earlier, those only make up a small portion of your chargebacks. You’ll still need to implement a dispute prevention strategy to keep you below network thresholds.

How to Maximize Your Shopify Protect Coverage

TL;DR

Shopify Protect is rules-driven. To avoid losing eligibility over small errors, enable Shop Pay everywhere, tighten fulfillment workflows, and use supported carriers. Process/ship orders quickly, and hit strict 7-day fulfillment and 10-day transit deadlines.

Shopify Protect eligibility is rules-based: getting the most out of it mostly comes down to execution. The program’s strict parameters mean a seemingly small hiccup can derail an otherwise low-risk order. I recommend that you:

Enable Shop Pay

You need a strategy to leverage Shopify Protect for all its worth. Since protection only applies to eligible Shop Pay orders, your first move is making Shop Pay available everywhere you sell. Your primary checkout, obviously but also any supported social commerce platforms.

Assess Your Fulfillment Workflow

Could things run more smoothly? Where are you seeing friction? Can things be made better? Create a fulfillment checklist that includes Shopify Protect requirements and other quality assurance steps. Pay attention to anything that may curtail human error — especially during high-volume times (like holidays).

Meet Deadlines

With Shopify Protect’s constrictive time frames, your orders need to get out the door as quickly as possible. We talked about it earlier, but it bears repeating: fulfillment must happen within seven days of the order, and the carrier must verify the shipment is “in transit” to its destination within 10 days.

Work With Supported Carriers

You likely already have preferred carriers in place, but be sure they’re supported by the program and can issue tracking numbers. If not, you’ll need to look elsewhere. Consider taking advantage of Shopify Shipping to ship your orders; this enables automatic tracking for shipments.

Consider Same-Day Fulfillment

Here’s another tip: if possible, consider implementing same-day fulfillment, particularly for any orders that are eligible for Shopify Protection. It’ll help ensure your orders make the deadlines… plus, your customers will love it.

Shopify Protect: Just One Piece of the Puzzle

As helpful as the program is, you can’t rely on Shopify Protect as your only means of handling chargebacks. It’s simply one component of a comprehensive chargeback management strategy.

FAQs

Does Shopify Protect cost anything?

No — Shopify Protect only applies to eligible Shop Pay orders. Even in those situations, coverage is limited to fraud disputes.

Why is my order showing “Not Protected“ when fraud analysis says it’s low risk?

An order flagged as low risk (by Shopify’s fraud analysis) may still show “Not Protected“ if it doesn’t meet Shopify Protect’s eligibility requirements. For example, using a non-supported carrier for shipment. Also worth noting is that Shopify Protect only applies to eligible Shop Pay orders, regardless of risk level.

Will Shopify Protect count against my chargeback rate?

Yes. While Shopify Protect covers eligible fraud chargebacks, those chargebacks still count toward your overall chargeback ratio.

Can I get protection for orders outside the US?

No. Shopify Protect is only available for eligible Shop Pay orders placed in the US. Orders from other countries are not covered, even if they would otherwise qualify.

What happens if I miss the 7-day fulfillment deadline?

If an eligible order isn’t fulfilled within seven days, it will no longer be covered by Shopify Protect. This is also true if the order is not “in transit” by the carrier within 10 days.

Does Shopify Protect cover “item not received“ chargebacks?

No. Shopify Protect only covers fraud chargebacks. “Item not received“ disputes and other non-fraud chargebacks are not eligible. In rare cases, however, an INR dispute will ultimately be found to be unauthorized (fraudulent), and may still be covered.

Can I use Shopify Protect with third-party payment processors?

No. Shopify Protect only works with eligible Shop Pay orders. Orders processed through third-party payment gateways are not covered.

What carriers are supported for tracking?

USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL, or others integrated with Shopify are supported, as long as they can supply a tracking number. Orders without tracking are not supported.
