Monicas Tips for ABC7 Chicago

Chargebacks911® COO Monica Eaton, a leading expert on chargebacks, provided tips and insight to ABC7 News Chicago for a recent feature.

A Chicago area gallery owner claims to have been burned by a fraudster. The man—a known con artist on the run since 2014—purchased $7,150 in works from the gallery. Days later, though, he called up the bank, claiming the transaction was fraudulent and demanding a chargeback.

It’s far more common to see chargeback abuse in the eCommerce environment. This is a clear-cut case of deliberate chargeback fraud though. And, as Monica testifies, the gallery owner has the right to fight back.

"That's fine, you don't need to prevent the chargeback,” Monica says of PayPal after informing the merchant they can’t overturn the transaction. “Still the merchant has rights to dispute that chargeback and get their money back if they can prove they have a valid sale." Monica suggests every merchant engage in chargeback representment. If merchants can’t fight back, the problem will continue getting worse.

The piece also features a video with Monica, running-down the basics of the chargeback process. Check out the news story and the video feature below:
