Merchants Fight IoT-Enabled Fraud

Monica Eaton Tackles Fraud Risk in Smart Devices for IoT For All

Chargebacks911® COO Monica Eaton is a regular columnist for IoT For All, a leading outlet for news and insight on all Internet of Things-related topics. In her latest feature, Monica explores the growing role of connected devices in commerce, and the potential risks involved.

IoT For All is dedicated to providing quality, unbiased content, resources, and news centered on the Internet of Things and related disciplines. They cover everything from new tools primed to upend commerce, to how businesses and consumers, in turn, shape the market themselves.

According to Monica, IoT technology carries a great deal of promise. However, we need to be careful about how we deploy these tools. Otherwise, we may easily create new opportunities for fraudsters to take advantage of the market. “There are drawbacks to the growing role of IoT in business,” Monica says. “If we’re careless, IoT technology missteps will lead to costly mistakes.”

In the post, Monica point to three areas—lack of regulation, insecure devices, and volume of data—as IoT vulnerabilities. We must address these key areas of weakness in the overall market. Otherwise, IoT tools could end up being more of a drain on the market than an asset.

“Bad actors are looking to new IoT tools and strategies just as eagerly as the average merchant. It’s nothing new; every time something new hits the market, fraudsters are among the first people to discover how to leverage it. What we need to do in response is to try to remain one step ahead wherever possible.”
