COO Says Understanding Risk is Key to Fraud Prevention

Monica Eaton Advises Online Users “Recognize the Risks & Reality”

Chargebacks911® COO Monica Eaton, a leading expert on fraud and chargeback preparedness, weighed in on the discussion for a recent discussion hosted by OppLoans.

OppLoans is a service that offers affordable borrowing with fast funding to help customers get the money they need. The company’s blog is a popular resource for insight on lending, finance…and yes, fraud prevention.

The post lays out eight fundamental tips to help consumers identify bad actors online and protect themselves from fraud. The author called on several high profile thought leaders in the fraud prevention space. For her part, Monica was able to speak to several points, including asking direct questions, reaching out through alternate channels, and using common sense.

Above all, though, consumers need to begin recognizing and truly understanding risk and the technologies they use. “Communicating with someone online is sort of like shouting at a stranger through a locked door, minus the peep-hole,” Monica explains. “You’re never entirely sure who the person is, and it’s incumbent upon you to adequately vet the person before you unlock your deadbolt.”

Consumers need to take responsibility for their communications, and employ behaviors to defend against bad actors.

“Like it or not, the responsibility is yours. The online world is eerily similar to communicating behind a locked door because there are barriers to transparency. Clearly, texting with someone online, whether you know them or not, is radically different than talking to them in person.”
