Tracy Cray, Managing Director UK & Europe Operations at Chargebacks911, was recently cited in The Express in a consumer warning about the surge in sophisticated romance scams targeting UK residents ahead of Valentine’s Day. The piece highlights how fraudsters are increasingly using emotional manipulation to extract money and personal information, often at great financial and emotional cost to victims.
The Express is a major UK news outlet with broad coverage across finance, personal finance, and consumer protection topics. Its reporting reaches millions of readers and frequently features expert commentary to help people stay informed about emerging risks in their daily lives.
As explained in the piece, Tracy herself was targeted by one of these scammers. Given her expertise in the field, she was able to immediately recognize the scheme. But, decided to lead the scammer on as a kind of experiment, with the aim of learning more about the tactic.
“What shocked me most wasn’t the story itself — it was how organized it was,” Tracy shared, reflecting on her own encounter explaining why these operations are so effective. “This wasn’t simply one person trying their luck but a system. Multiple people, multiple roles, emotional scripts, financial structures and shift patterns. It felt industrial.”
The article explains that romance scams often begin with sincere-seeming online interactions that evolve into requests for financial help. Many victims don’t realize they’ve been drawn into a sophisticated scam until months later, having been spun a web of emotional narratives, fabricated job stories, and staged crises. Scammers may use multiple personas, fake documents, and even contrived emergencies to earn trust before asking for money, gift cards, cryptocurrency or bank details.
“For many victims, the financial loss is devastating, but the emotional damage can be even worse,” Tracy continued. “It changes how people trust, how they form relationships, and how safe they feel online. Romance scams take confidence, security and dignity, as well as money.”
